The Braindump Method – reboot your brain

Do you always have far too many things on your mind at once and don’t know which problem to tackle first? Then it’s time for a brain dump! All you need is a pen and a blank sheet of paper. In today’s magazine article, we introduce you to the clever method with which you can clear the chaos in your head in no time at all.

We all know it: sometimes there is a huge mess in our head, tasks are piling up and we don’t know what to start with. The children have to be picked up from school soon, the favourite coat has been lying freshly cleaned in the laundry for days, the application for the new project has to be submitted by the end of the month and we actually wanted to accompany our mother to a doctor’s appointment. Add to that various unanswered emails and a yawningly empty fridge. Situations like these quickly trigger stress and a feeling of being overwhelmed, virtually paralysing us and leading to dissatisfaction in the long term. To prevent this from happening in the first place, more and more people swear by the braindump method, which brings more clarity and relaxation into your everyday life with very simple means. Braindump can be translated into German as “brain drain”. The idea behind it is that you empty your head completely, get an overview of your tasks and problems and then work through them in a structured way. You don’t need more than a few minutes of time, a pen and a sheet of paper.

Three steps to a clear head

1.) Write everything down. In order to get an overview of the chaos in your head, you have to write down everything that is currently spinning around there – really everything. Write down not only your unfinished professional and private tasks, but also interpersonal tensions, worries and fears. Just write wildly. Everything has to come out, no matter how big or small! You will see that you will feel much freer and more relaxed afterwards.

2.) What is really important? After you have completely emptied your brain, you should make an overview of your notes. This step is especially fun, because now you have to cross out and sort out unimportant things: Rigorously cross out and sort out unimportant things. Is the planned meeting in the afternoon really necessary or will a short text message suffice? Do I really have to make the pizza dough for the evening meal myself or will the ready-made product do for once? After all, I only informed the customer yesterday, so an update next week is perfectly sufficient. Should I quickly call my girlfriend, with whom I had a fight, and apologise and thus get rid of the problem that has been bothering me for hours? After that, I’m sure I’ll be able to continue working in a much more concentrated and relaxed manner.

3.) Now it’s time to organise. After you have clarified which projects and problems are really important for you, the organisation begins. Assign your tasks to different categories, e.g. private matters, work, family, and make a plan of how and in what order you want to do them. Ideally, you should try to outsource or delegate as many things as possible to give yourself more room to manoeuvre. Make one or more to-do lists and distinguish between short-term tasks and long-term projects.

That’s all?

The brain dump is a simple but very effective method for stress reduction. The aim is to recognise one’s own behavioural patterns over time and thus prevent stressful situations from arising in the long term. Do you perhaps always take on too much and get stressed as a result? Does someone else do a certain task just as conscientiously as you do? Does an all-nighter mean that you can hardly concentrate the next day? The brain dump method can be a great help in answering these questions.

For beginners, it can be useful to do a brain dump every day. Later, you can switch to a weekly or even monthly rhythm or use the technique only when acutely needed. If you didn’t manage to empty your brain during the day, you can also do the brain dump directly after coming home. This way, the clutter in your head is sorted once more and you can start your evening off relaxed and without a guilty conscience. The braindump method acts like a reboot for the brain, clearing your head and allowing you to concentrate on the things that really matter.
