Thank you, blackbird!

Thank you, blackbird!

True talent shines through. In a recent study by the University of Exeter, the blackbird's song ranks highly when it comes to relaxation and health-promoting effects. This fantastic result prompted me to give a little something back to the small singing star. After all, it also provides the virtuoso melodies for our soundboxes.

Right now, she's singing again. It's 4:55 a.m., and the blackbird outside my window is starting her morning song. It sounds beautiful, so peaceful. I only learned about the positive effects of the blackbird's song on our health since I started working at Relaxound. The blackbird is somewhat like a colleague; her song is used in the Zwitscherbox and delights people from all over the world. Unconsciously, I felt that her chirping did me good, but nothing more. When you look into it more closely, there is plenty of scientific evidence that the blackbird is something truly special. Here are some reasons why we should simply say thank you to her.

Singing with impact: The Blackbird's warble

If there were a Grammy for health-promoting singing talents, the blackbird would deserve it. Her warble is capable of immediately lowering our blood pressure, making our hearts beat more calmly, reducing the stress hormone cortisol, and relieving pain. From the first note, we feel lighter, calmer, our whole body relaxes. This is made possible by the blackbird's unique way of warbling. Not every bird's voice relaxes us. The cawing of the magpie or the hoarse call of a crow can have the opposite effect. As a study by the University of Surrey found, we prefer bird songs that are "soft, high-frequency, and offer a high level of complexity," according to Dr. Eleanor Ratcliffe, lecturer in environmental psychology at the University of Surrey. And here, the blackbird is a true natural talent!

The Blackbird's voice hits the right note

The blackbird's song sounds particularly pleasant to our ears. Her high-frequency warble is more calming than low frequencies. Her voice sounds bright, clear, and friendly. Therefore, the blackbird's song relaxes us particularly well. To have a positive effect on us, the song should also be melodic and offer variety. Here too, the blackbird scores: The male blackbird varies his song virtuously between cheerful trills, relaxed chirping, and artful flute tones. Like a good soundtrack, the blackbird manages to reinterpret her theme time and time again. Only the very best can do that. Result: You can never get enough of their melodies.

Small singing talents in urban and rural settings

The blackbird's warble is like home to me. It resounds in the Thuringian forests of my childhood. Likewise, in the small park behind my Berlin apartment. Her melodic chirping signals relaxed nature and evokes positive memories. During a trip to a lake in Brandenburg, the blackbird's song accompanies me. For a long time, that was natural to me. Which it is not. So, at this point, a little thank you, dear blackbird! Here's to many more great songs! I look forward to your singing even more from now on. And when you rustle through the leaves next time, looking for food, and I pause and suspect a much larger animal (like a wild boar), then I'll smile briefly, wink at you, and say: Thank you, buddy!
